Virat Kohli's incredible T20 World Cup semi-final record up in smoke as ex-India skipper hits new low against England

Virat Kohli’s impressive run in the ICC T20 World Cup semi-finals was ended by England pacer Reece Topley.
A lot was expected from Virat Kohli when the talismanic batter of the Indian side walked out to bat with skipper Rohit Sharma against Jos Buttler’s England on Thursday. Gunning for glory in the Caribbean, former champions India were aiming to avenge its heartbreaking 2022 World Cup defeat in the semi-final 2 of the 2024 edition of the ICC event at the Providence Stadium in Guyana.

Facing the heat for his below-par run at the T20 World Cup, Kohli deposited the first six of the semi-final between India and England. However, pacer Reece Topley exacted his revenge against Kohli by getting the better of the former India skipper in the same over. Pulled for a six, Topley cleaned up Kohli two balls later after England skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and invited India to bat at Guyana.

Kohli hits a new low in knockout round
Hitting a new low at the business end of the T20 World Cup, Kohli recorded his first single-digit score in the semi-finals. Before Team India's meeting with England, Kohli scored a half-century in each of his last four semi-final appearances for the 2007 champions. The 35-year-old notched up impressive scores of 72*(44) against South Africa in 2014, quick-fire 89*(47) vs West Indies in 2016, and gritty 50(40) against England in 2022. Kohli has been dismissed thrice by left-arm fast bowlers in the 2024 season. Kohli has scored 21 (21) runs against southpaws with an average of just 7 in T20Is this year.

'He's saving for the finals': Rohit Sharma's king-sized response on Virat Kohli's torrid run in T20 World Cup
By
HT Sports Desk
Jun 28, 2024 07:49 AM IST
Virat Kohli's form has been under the scanner since the start of the T20 World Cup, and Rohit Sharma addressed the concern after India's semi-final win.
Team India showcased its dominance with a commanding performance to storm into the T20 World Cup final, crushing England by 68 runs in the semi-final on Thursday. India asserted their dominance from the outset in the match, which also saw rain-related interruptions.

India's captain Rohit Sharma, left, and Virat Kohli celebrate scoring runs during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup second semifinal cricket match between England and India at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence, Guyana(PTI)
Skipper Rohit Sharma led the charge, whose aggressive 57 off 39 balls set a solid foundation after the early dismissals of Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant. He received strong support from Suryakumar Yadav, who contributed 47 off 36 balls, helping India to a competitive total of 171/7 after being put into bat.
In response, England struggled against India's relentless bowling attack and were bowled out for just 103 in 16.4 overs. With this victory, India booked a date with first-time finalists South Africa in Barbados on Saturday.
However, despite the dominance throughout the tournament, Virat Kohli's poor form is one lingering concern for the side. The star batter has been horribly short of runs since the opening match of the edition, and it didn't change in Guyana when he was dismissed for 9 off as many deliveries in the third over.

With the win, Rohit Sharma also became the most successful T20I skipper with 49 wins, overtaking Pakistan captain Babar Azam (48) for most wins as T20I skipper. The result saw India maintain their second-longest winning streaks in T20Is, bagging their 11th win (from December 2023 to June 2024). The previous best is 12 wins between November 2021 to February 2022. Meanwhile, finalists South Africa lead with the most wins in a single T20 World Cup edition, with 8* this year, India are second with 7*.

India won the toss and opted to bat in the rain-hit match. A half-century by Rohit (57 off 39 balls) saw India reach 171/7 in 20 overs, setting a target of 172 runs. Meanwhile, Chris Jordan took three wickets for England.
Chasing 172, England were bowled out for 103 in 16.4 overs, as Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel returned with figures of 3/19 and 3/23 respectively. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah bagged two dismissals.

‘Keep your rubbish to yourself’: Harbhajan Singh gives mouthful to Vaughan for ‘silly’ ICC favouring India theory
By

Harbhajan Singh served a verbal volley at Michael Vaughan for his 'silly' theory that Guyana favoured India during the T20 World Cup semi-final against England.
Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh gave a mouthful to Michael Vaughan, albeit virtually, after the former England captain continued to blame the ICC for favouring India with a pre-decided venue for the T20 World Cup semi-finals. For commercial interests and to maximise Indian viewership, it was decided that India would play the second semi-final (if they qualify) in Guyana, irrespective of their standing in the Super Eight stage.
Harbhajan Singh verbally volleyed at Michael Vaughan for his 'silly' theory that Guyana favoured India during the T20 World Cup semi-final against England.
Harbhajan Singh verbally volleyed at Michael Vaughan for his 'silly' theory that Guyana favoured India during the T20 World Cup semi-final against England.
Vaughan said ICC were unfair to other teams by deciding to give India's semi-final at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. He took to X to vent out his frustration during the first semi-final between South Africa and Afghanistan. "Surely this Semi should have been the Guyana one... but because the whole event is geared towards India it’s so unfair on others… #T20IWorldCup," he wrote.
He continued to take indirect digs at India and ICC even during the India vs England semi-final. After it became clear that India were going to march to the final, Vaughan said the Rohit Sharma-led side was way better on slower and spinning wickets. "India throughly deserve to be in the final... The best team in tournament so far... Was always going to hard for England on this pitch... India just so much better on lower slower spinning pitches .. #T20IWorldCup."
A user was not amused by Vaughan's comments. "Now you won't cry about ICC giving semis to India in Guyana," he replied. Vaughan remained firm on his stance and said England would have won the semi-final if it was played at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba and that Guyana was a “lovely venue pick for India.”

Ravi Shastri questioned Virat Kohli’s batting approach in powerplay during the T20 World Cup semi-final between India and England.
With Virat Kohli recording another failure at the ICC T20 World Cup, former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri voiced his concerns about the drastic change in the batting style of the ex-India captain. Kohli's impressive run in the knockout rounds of the T20 World Cup came to an abrupt end on Thursday as the veteran batter registered his first-ever single-digit score in the semi-final stage of the ICC event.

Kohli was cleaned up by pacer Reece Topley in the second over of the Indian innings. The Indian opener had deposited a six off Topley in the same over before receiving his marching orders. Kohli's cheap dismissal invited a noteworthy reaction from Shastri, who was not pleased with the ultra-aggressive approach of the Indian opener. With skipper Rohit Sharma upping the ante from one end in the powerplay, ex-India head coach Shastri noted that Kohli should have taken the role of an anchor at the Providence Stadium in Guyana.

Axar removed England captain Jos Buttler by going away from his usual style of skidding the ball and decided to spin it. The English skipper tried to counterattack with a reverse sweep. He bottomed it straight to Rishabh Pant behind the stumps.
He continued to cause English batters a handful of trouble, and Kuldeep came in to increase their woes.
Axar removed the opening order and starred with his influential spell of 3/23. Kuldeep provided the ideal support by fending off the middle-order and ending with the figures of 3/19.
Rohit heaped praise on the left-arm spin duo while revealing the plan of action that they adopted to take the brunt of England's aggressive nature.
"They are gun spinners. When the conditions like that are in front of them, It's difficult to play some shots. The pressure is on them as well to come and execute those balls, but they were calm and knew what to bowl. We had a little chat after the first innings - try and hit the stumps as much as possible, keep the stumps in play," Rohit said in the post-match presentation.

After his influential 57-run knock came to an end, Rohit walked back with 5,033 runs under his belt across all formats as the Indian skipper.
Stalwart batter Virat Kohli tops the chart with a whopping 12,883 runs to his name as the Indian skipper in all three formats.
MS Dhoni, who made his mark with his leadership and captaincy skills, is the second-highest run-scorer as the Indian captain across all formats with a tally of 11,207. Mohammad Azharuddin and Sourav Ganguly are next in line with 8,095 and 7,643 runs, respectively.
The situation was similar to the one that India faced against Australia. Virat Kohli lost his wicket early, and Rishabh Pant went back without making much of an impact.

In seven matches the experienced batter has mustered up 75 runs at an average of 10.71. It seemed as if the semi-final against England was the perfect stage for him to fire back and find his form ahead of the final.
He smoked the ball into the stand over mid-wicket hinting at a possible long stay at the crease. But Kohli allowed Reece Topley to fire back by clipping the leg stump after the Indian tried to shovel it towards the boundary.
Despite Kohli's underwhelming season, the Indian skipper isn't worried about Kohli's form and backed his compatriot to steal the show in the final.
"He is a quality player. Any player can go through that. We do understand his class and we do understand his importance in all these big games. Form is never a problem. When you've played cricket for 15 years, form is never a problem. He's looking good, the intent is there, he's probably saving for the final. Absolutely ," Rohit said in the post-match presentation.
